Along with our full time team of associates we employ associate landscape architects with Master of Landscape Architecture degrees. Our construction teams include carpenters, masons, and a horticulturalist. We maintain a five acre holding nursery, storage yard and large modern wood and metal shop. Our facilities and skills allow our services to extend beyond plantings and basic hardscape. We can create detailed trellises, patios, decks, and fences- elements that will carry the design even in the winter.
Reid Hollowell was born on the seat of a skid loader-okay, not really, but he has been working along side his father since he was old enough to walk. Reid’s specialty as one client stated is “Michaelangelo with a skid loader!” A graduate of Kalamazoo College, Reid earned degrees in Economics and Fine Art. His hobbies are antique micro-car restoration and the study of marine ecosystems.
John Hollowell is our principal landscape architect. All design work is reviewed and often drawn by him. A graduate of Michigan State University, John Hollowell is licensed landscape architect and builder. John has been a guest speaker and critic for Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Lawrence Institute of Technology, andMatthaei Botanical Gardens.
Pat Schrock is always working. He’s spent his daily 8-4 here for about 8 years. Around here his specialties are custom carpentry and stone patios. In his spare time he operates a private recording studio, fixes music equipment, and renovates his house. Anyone that’s been near Pat on a job could guess his musical inclinations, as he’s often found whistling while he works. Pat has a degree from U of M, Ann Arbor in Sound Engineering.
Todd Herbst has worked for JH&A for 7 years. It’s hard to narrow down what Todd’s ‘specialty’ would be -as he does a lot of the dirty work. Although he does it all with a smile, we think his specialties are sprinkler systems and masonry. Todd graduated from from Western Michigan University with degrees in Enviromental Studies & Business and completed an environmental (SCA) internship in Colorado. He spends his spare time wrenching on old motorcycles and working with various sustainable environment programs. Todd is a new father of twins!
Enjoys motorcycles, being in the outdoors and last year gathered over 500 morel mushrooms in the spring!
Likes snowboarding, tuning and modifying cars, and tending to his hobby farm.
Crew, from Left to Right- Reid, Michael, Sean, Todd, Henry, Patrick, and Andrew.
"Just a note to say we are very pleased with the aesthetic you and your team created for us in the backyard. We had a BBQ yesterday and everyone was very complimentary. Thanks, too, for the Russian Sage and the upkeep on the landscape lighting. As I write this, the sprinkler system has been performing its daily tasks without incident!"
"Glad you took a photo as things are looking terrific. And I'm serious - we are getting SO many compliments, particularly in the last several weeks! A random neighbor asked for your name. Several delivery guys have made comments like 'Your landscaping looks terrific!' and 'You've got the best yard in the neighborhood!' We, of course, couldn't agree more!"
"The place looks great. We already got a lot of compliments. Please let the crew know that I appreciated their beautiful work. I told them too, but I think they would appreciate me telling you."
"I'm really happy with how the work turned out-- The porch is beautiful!"
"The grass came up and the trees are flourishing. Many people who walk by the house stop to tell us the landscaping looks great!"
"I just loved the way the patio has turned out. I am so glad to have taken your suggestions on all matters concerning this project. I want to commend the entire team that came out to work. They were all so thorough and genial in their dealings, and needless to say, absolutely pro. I look forward to your help in future! I know it was probably a relatively small project for you, and we appreciate all the care and time you gave to it just the same."
"Just want to say many thanks to you, Pat, Kate and the rest of your crew on the fantastic work you did on our fencing project. We could not be happier with the results..it looks awesome. We feel it really ties together the house and the property. We love it. Such a huge upgrade for our yard...and a great backdrop for phase two...some landscaping....down the road! I know it was probably a relatively small project for you, and we appreciate all the care and time you gave to it just the same."
